v1.17.0: readable text on every surface
Released 30 September 2026. The latest foundations release strengthens text contrast across themes and product families.
What changed from v1.16.0
Nine text-role values change, the text-accent token is added, and the token contrast check becomes a blocking gate. Primary colours and colour ramps remain unchanged.
Text has its own role
Links, accent text, and text on tinted surfaces use dedicated semantic tokens. A primary fill colour should not be reused as a text colour.
Known exception
The release retains the documented orange-700 text exception for legacy and internal surfaces. The complete release notes preserve the details and limitations.
